What is the Recovery Time After LASIK Eye Surgery?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quick LASIK eye surgery is – less than 15 minutes – and are thrilled to hear that LASIK recovery time may be quick as well.

Following LASIK procedures, patients can return home the same day, after just 30 minutes in our patient recovery area. Just be sure to arrange a ride home, since you should not get behind the wheel immediately after the procedure. It is also recommended that you keep your eyes closed for the next two to three hours to give them additional rest. Think of it as a doctor-sanctioned nap!

The majority of LASIK eye surgery patients report little to no discomfort and notice improvement in their vision almost immediately, though individual LASIK results vary. By the following day, patients may achieve optimal vision and can resume their everyday activities, including driving and going to work, with one noticeable difference: they are now going through life with improved eyesight.

LASIK is a medical procedure but the risks of LASIK are minimal.  It’s important to consult your surgeon to understand the risks and benefits. Nevertheless, there are a few things patients can do to ensure a swifter and easier laser eye surgery recovery. Your Bernitsky Vision LASIK surgeon will send you home with protective goggles. Make sure to wear them as instructed. Additionally, to help minimize the laser eye surgery risks, avoid wearing eye makeup for at least 72 hours. Patients should also avoid rubbing their eyes or swimming underwater. LASIK eye surgery recovery can be hindered by having foreign objects enter your eyes, so keep those areas around your eyes clean and be sure to wear those goggles.

The most common of the few LASIK surgery side effects is eye dryness. To remedy this, you will be sent home with eye drops. Generally, patients require these for just a short period of time following the procedure. During the first week, you should use antibiotic and steroid eye drops. Then, for the next two to three months, artificial tears can help keep your eyes feeling lubricated.

Lastly, anytime you are in the sun, be sure to bring out the shades. Sunglasses are actually recommended for eye protection whether or not you’ve had LASIK, and they definitely help ease your recovery from laser eye surgery.
