LASIK eye surgery is the most popular elective procedure in the world, and new technological developments have made it safer and more effective than ever. LASIK recovery time is fast, allowing you to get back to your life within hours of the procedure.
If you are looking for vision correction, Dr. Bernitsky of Bernitsky Vision in Albuquerque can help.
LASIK Recovery Time
The actual LASIK procedure is very quick. It will take approximately five to six minutes per eye to complete the surgery. Afterward, you will move to a quiet recovery area, where you will rest for 20-30 minutes before you’ll be discharged to go home. You will need someone to drive you home from the appointment.
Most patients are able to resume normal activities like work and driving within 24 to 48 hours of the surgery. You should notice improved vision almost immediately, and most people are 20/20 by the next day. It’s important to rest your eyes by keeping them closed for the first 2-3 hours after surgery.
What to Do After Surgery
LASIK is a minimally invasive surgery, and there is little to no discomfort associated with its recovery. However, for the best results, there are a few things you can do:
- Remember to take it easy. You will want to avoid contact sports, swimming under water, or exposure to dusty dirty environments for the first couple of weeks after your procedure. If you work in a dusty environment, or one where the risk of contamination exists, eye protection in the form of safety goggles are recommended.
- Rest for at least a few hours after the procedure. This minimizes discomfort. We recommend napping for at least two hours when you get home from your LASIK eye surgery appointment.
- Wear protective goggles. We will send you home with protective eye wear. Be sure to wear these as instructed.
- Avoid wearing makeup in the eye area for 72 hours after surgery.
Eye dryness is the most common side effect of LASIK eye surgery in the first few weeks after the procedure. We will provide you with eye drops/artificial tears to counteract the dry eye. You will need to use these for several weeks after surgery.
