Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure, and many patients experience near-immediate vision improvements. However, full recovery takes time.
Post-Operative Recovery Time
Laser-assisted cataract surgery at Bernitsky Vision is a relatively simple procedure that may be completed in as little as 15 minutes when no complications arise. Patients are usually ready to go home about an hour after the procedure once a brief post-op exam is completed and you have received recovery instructions from our staff.
Please note: patients who undergo cataract removal surgery will not be allowed to drive themselves home. You must have a driver present to be released. You should not operate a vehicle until you have been cleared by Dr. Bernitsky during one of your post-op exams, which may be as early as the next day after surgery.
Allowing for Full Cataract Surgery Recovery
Although you may immediately see more clearly after cataract surgery, your eyes need time to completely heal. Eye healing is best achieved when eyes are not strained or put under pressure and are kept free of any substance (including water) that may introduce infection.
In order to allow your eyes to fully recover from cataract surgery, we instruct patients to:
- Avoid strenuous activity, including lifting more than 25 pounds
- Avoid bending and/or exercises that induce blood flow to your head (this increases internal pressure on the eye)
- Keep eyes closed while showering and washing your face
- Wear sunglasses when in the sunlight and the protective eye shield we provide while sleeping
In general, all patients should observe these instructions for at least one week following cataract surgery. If you have health conditions that may slow recovery time, you may need to observe these instructions longer.
