Quick healing times and immediate results often make LASIK the #1 choice for vision correction surgery. However, LASIK is not the best choice for everyone. For patients who are not ideal candidates for LASIK, there are other options for vision correction, including photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) eye surgery.
What is PRK Eye Surgery?
PRK eye surgery is similar to LASIK in that it uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct vision. PRK differs from the LASIK procedure by directly reshaping the corneal surface rather than removing corneal tissue from under a protective corneal flap.

PRK Eye Surgery Recover and Results
Because the epithelium (or skin surface) of the cornea is removed, there is a longer recovery time associated with PRK. Discomfort following PRK eye surgery may last as long as three to four days. Visual recovery after PRK is slower and involves more fluctuation in vision than after LASIK. It sometimes takes several weeks for vision to improve to a level adequate for driving and other routine tasks.
Your best vision may not be fully achieved for up to six to eight weeks after the procedure, although recovery is sometimes much faster than that. It is important that you use the eye drops given to you for post-operative care as directed to speed healing and prevent infection.
When is PRK Eye Surgery Recommended instead of LASIK?
PRK eye surgery is often an excellent vision correction option for patients with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism who are not good LASIK candidates. Patients with thin or irregular corneas, dry eyes and those who have had previous radial keratotomy may be better candidates for PRK than LASIK.
