When you are considering laser eye surgery, it’s important to know what you can expect. LASIK is a common and simple surgery, and at Bernitsky Vision of Albuquerque we follow the same procedure with each patient to ensure consistent results

If you have any additional questions or concerns, Dr. Bernitsky will take the time to answer them when you come to your scheduled consultation.

Before Your Laser Eye Surgery

Prior to surgery, Dr. Bernitsky will consult with you to assess your overall health, visual acuity and goals. In this assessment, Dr. Bernitsky will determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK or whether a different procedure may be more effective for addressing your concerns.

If LASIK is the best procedure for you, an appointment will be scheduled for our on-site surgical center. On the day of your appointment, be sure to bring a friend or family member who can drive you home. This person may also watch the procedure if you would like them to.

During the Procedure

The day of your procedure, you will begin with a Valium for relaxation. The eye will be prepped with antibiotic drops, anti-inflammatory drops and a local anesthetic. During the procedure, you will be reclining in a chair and asked to focus on a pinpoint of light, which will help you keep your eye still. A tracking device in the laser itself will adjust for any small movements of the eye, ensuring the most accurate correction possible.  Your eye will be comfortably held open so that you don’t have to worry about blinking.

The surgery will take approximately 5 to 6 minutes per eye. Afterward, you will spend some time in our quiet recovery area to rest before going home.

LASIK Surgery After-Care

Immediately after surgery, you may feel the urge to rub your eye, and you may experience some mild irritation and discomfort.  We will fit you with protective goggles and eye drops that will protect your eyes and soothe some of the dryness, itching or discomfort. We recommend that you follow your surgery with a nap to give your eyes time to rest. You can learn more about recommended after-care here.
