Is an Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) the Best Vision Correction Surgery for Me?
The Staar ICL (implantable contact lens) has the potential to help millions of people achieve great vision. Because ICL surgery does not remove any natural tissues, contact lens implants are viable options, often when LASIK surgery in Albuquerque is not recommended.
Ideal Candidates for ICL Surgery
ICL surgery is only recommended for patients whose eyes have fully developed and their vision correction prescription is stable, making implantable contact lenses an ideal vision correction option for patients between the ages of 21 and 45 with any degree of myopia (nearsightedness). However, ICL surgery is not indicated as a correction for hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism.

Fewer Limitations with ICL
The ICL surgery involves making a small incision in the cornea to allow the implantation of a biocompatible collamer lens between the iris and your natural lens. Because no tissue is removed or altered, the natural shape and structure of the corneas are not limiting factors. For this reason, patients with thin or irregularly shaped corneas, dry eye or very high corrections (well beyond what LASIK can safely correct) may still be candidates for the Staar Visian contact lens implants.
Contraindications to ICL surgery may include:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Shallow anterior chamber depth
- Pre-existing cataracts
A consultation is the best way to determine whether ICL surgery is an option for you.
