Get to Know Your Eye Care Expert

Your vision is important, so when you finally make the decision to invest in permanent vision correction, you want to make sure that you are entrusting one of your most precious senses to a skilled professional. Dr. David A. Bernitsky is, certainly, one of the most highly skilled vision correction specialists in the State of New Mexico and beyond, but he’s more than that. He’s a dedicated member of his local community with a knack for trivia.

Dr. Bernitsky’s Vision Correction Expertise

Dr. Bernitsky has been helping people see more clearly since 1988. His educational and professional background gives him an expertise in the field of vision correction that is unmatched in New Mexico.

Dr. B, a native New Mexican, prepared for his medical studies through his dual major (biology and chemistry) undergraduate degree program at UNM. From Albuquerque he moved on to Oklahoma City where he pursued his MD from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. While there, Dr. B. was the recipient of the Mosby Scholarship and Merck Scholarship and left a Graduate of Distinction.  Dr. B stayed in Oklahoma for two post-graduate professional experiences: a year-long flexible internship at the College of Medicine and his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Oklahoma’s Dean A. McGee Eye Institute.

From Oklahoma City, Dr. B moved to Baltimore, Maryland to complete his fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After his fellowship he was invited to join the faculty and became an instructor at the Institute.

In 1988, Dr. B headed back home to New Mexico where he has been helping local residents achieve clearer vision ever since. After serving as the Eye Associates of New Mexico‘s Director of Corneal and Refractive Surgery for ten years, Dr. B opened his private practice—Bernitsky Vision—in 1998.

Today, Dr. B is one of only four corneal specialists in the entire state and the only one whose practice is devoted entirely to vision correction surgery. He has recently been recognized as one of the Top 100 Visian Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) surgeons in the nation! With Dr. B at the helm, Bernitsky Vision is able to offer the most comprehensive range of vision correction options available in one office! He regularly participates in research studies and is widely published.

We don’t mention his accomplishments to brag, but to let you know that when you choose Dr. B to perform your vision correction procedures, you are entrusting your vision to one of the most highly skilled surgeons in the country.

Dr. Bernitsky Outside the Office

Vision correction is more than just a job to Dr. Bernitsky.  He truly loves his work and feels blessed to be able to use his skills to help others.  For that reason, Dr. B and his family are regularly involved in “vision missions” outside the U.S.  Dr. B, his family and other volunteer physicians and staff pack up and travel the world  (often through Medical Ministries International) to provide eye care and vision correcting surgeries to people in many nations.  The ability to help alleviate blindness, even on a small scale, is a exceptionally rewarding endeavor and something that Dr. B enjoys tremendously.

But Dr. B isn’t all work and no play. He’s a supporter of all things New Mexico-related, which is evident in Bernitsky Vision‘s support of local high school athletics, New Mexico arts organizations, etc. Still, one fun fact about Dr. B that never finds a place on his CV is his uncanny ability to recall details. He’s the kind of guy who likes to read encyclopedias…literally. 60s and 70s bands are his trivia specialty. He may not remember birthdays and anniversaries, but he can tell you that Chicago’s lead guitarist was Terry Kath until 1978 when he was replaced by Donnie Dacus.
